Las Vegas - Low Budget Edition

Las Vegas is cool, unless you don't want to spend a lot of money. We wanted to see the legendary city ourselves but we also planned on spending as little money as possible and here is how it went.

The most important information we got from fellow travellers is to avoid Las Vegas on weekends because everything including the Hotels is way more expensive. We checked it online and it was true,
on weekdays Hotel prices are about 50% off. We booked the Treasure Island, a huge
hotel/casino/mall complex on the strip. It is the cheapest hotel you can get directly on the strip, of course there are cheaper ones but they are far off the Las Vegas Boulevard. We decided that the
slightly higher price is worth the location mostly because all the action in Vegas is happening on the
strip and we just stayed for two nights. When booking the hotel be careful, the prices you see on the
Fuck Trump
websites are just the room prices but the hotels like to charge an extra 'resort fee' so the price is about double as high in the end. The room we got was great except for the view, all we saw was a shiny golden Trump Tower. Therefore we kept the curtains closed the whole stay.

Free things to do in Las Vegas

  1. Free Shows: The good thing is you can go into every Casino for free. Also the most casinos on the strip offer some sort of attraction you can watch without paying. Bellagio's fountains performing to Celine Dion (maybe sounds aweful but it is quite nice to watch), the Mirage's Vulcano show with a lot of fire and water, The Flamingos Casino with a bird zoo inside the building, ... the list goes on and on. You will find a lot of interesting things just strolling along the strip.
  2. Free Entries: Another perk of weekdays in Las Vegas is that the clubs have free entry on certains days. The average entry fee is around 40$ and up. A good website to be in the know where cool stuff is happening is eventbrite. That also where we found our free enrty for the Encore Beach Club in the Wynn Casino, the most expensive on the strip. eventbrite
  3. Seven Magic Mountains: This is an art installation a few miles outside of Las Vegas (about 15 minutes car drive). Simply it is just big colorful stones stacked to three meter high towers. It's cool to look at but it is way better to use a photo location. We headed there for sunset and even had flares and firework with us. You can shoot basically everything in the dessert of Nevada so we bought some firework just in chase we feel like it.
  4. Cheap food: Save the vouchers you get handed when you check in or pass by some places. Also pay attention to special offers like 1+1 at the Buffet at your hotel.  Most of the time the restaurant and buffets are too expensive but the special offers make it affordable. If this is still to much walk away from the strip. Here you will find nothing fancy but the prices are reasonable. The cheapest method: Breakfast in bed. We took some camping stuff to our room and made peanut butter and jelly bread for breakfast.
